Barbados, Caribbean Islands Barbados is the most easterly of all of the Caribbean islands and lies in the Atlantic Ocean. The island covers just over 165 square miles and is sub-divided into 11 main administrative parishes. The island is extremely popular with tourists, and is often considered as one of the most "English" Caribbean Islands. It is renowned for its production of rum and grapefruit in particular. The island's capital is Bridgetown and is situated in the south west area of Barbados. The population of the island is around 279,000 people, and the island has some of the highest quality of living statistics, and literacy rates in the world.
Barbados is home to some world renowned golf courses such as Sandy Lane and West Moreland. It offers some excellent beaches, resorts and hotels, and is well equipped for handling the vast numbers of tourists who visit each year. The island is a popular stop-off for cruises. The people are generally extremely friendly, however there are a number of beach / street vendors who will try and sell their goods to you who may come over as a little pushy and sometimes intrusive, but can often be sent away by a polite 'no thank you'. The weather in Barbados is generally hot and sunny, but, as with so many of the Caribbean islands, can be susceptible to thunderstorms and tropical cyclones. It is worth checking some annual weather data to see the type of conditions you can expect before booking a trip. Car rental is a great way of getting to see the island and driving is relatively simple, although Bridgetown itself can be very chaotic, so unless you are confident, it is not recommended to drive through town itself. Alternatively many hotels do offer shuttle bus services into Bridgetown allowing you a few hours to explore the town. The country is well served by its International Airport, which is also home to one of the Concorde aircraft, in a purpose built museum. Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and American Airlines all fly to the island regularly, often daily. Click here for pictures.
