Grenada, Caribbean Islands

Grenada is one of the Caribbean Islands. Grenada was discovered in 1498 by Christopher Columbus. The island gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1974 but the head of state for Grenada is still Queen Elizabeth II.

The capital of Grenada is St. George and is home to the majority of the island's population of around 103,000 people. Grenada has the nickname of 'The Spice Island' due to its long history of producing exotic spices.

It is extremely popular with tourists and boasts many white sand beaches and luxurious resorts. Unfortunately Grenada suffered the effects of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 which caused 39 deaths and serious amounts of destruction to this pleasant island. Work has been undertaken to restore much of the island to its former glory.

The people in Grenada, as in much of the Caribbean are extremely friendly, and with English being so widely spoken it is a hotspot for tourists, particularly those from the UK and the U.S.A. Click here for pictures.
