Key West, FL, USA Key West is the last of a string of islands off the southern tip of the state of Florida in the United States of America. Key West was a popular destination for Americans in the 60's and 70's - especially those reaching retirement age. They decided to head south in order to seek out the sun and where better to head than Key West, the southernmost point of United States of America. A small island itself, Key West is a string of several islands (collectively known as the Keys). These islands are connected by a roadway and are all within an hour or so drive of mainland USA. The island is a hotspot for young tourists, with some fabulous bars and restaurants such as Sloppy Joe's (made famous through its connection to Ernest Hemmingway). The island is also relatively close to the Caribbean island of Cuba, and has a relaxed feel about it, which is typical of many of the Caribbean islands.
Key West offers many water-sport activities including jet skiing and sailing through many of the waterfront hotels. For a more cultural tourist visit we recommend visiting the lighthouse on Key West, which can be climbed by tourists and offers some excellent views out across the island on a sunny day (see our 'Links' page for opening times and prices before planning your visit). The island of Key West itself is a popular stop for cruise liners too, and the island copes well with the large numbers of people that stay there. Street entertainment, as well as live music acts in bars are extremely popular. The easiest way to access Key West is by car from mainland USA, however due to the island's size many of the roads are quite busy. Walking offers the best experience for soaking up the true atmosphere of Key West, and allows you to see as much as possible in the busy, narrow streets. It is worth remembering, that if traveling with children, many bars do not permit people under the age of 21 after certain times and underage drinking is a very serious offence in the whole of the United States of America.
