Koh Samui, Thailand Koh Samui is a small island off of mainland Thailand. It is sometimes spelt Ko Samui. It has a population of around 48000 people. The island is extremely popular with tourists and small 'towns' have developed around the main beach areas. Chaweng beach covers the east hand side of the island and is probably the most popular destination on the island. During the day it is busy with traders, selling everything from clothes to CD's and jewelery. From evening until late in the night the bars and restaurants in the area open up with traditional, local Thai food in addition to international cuisine at extremely low prices.
Local people are friendly, but it is easy to be encouraged to purchase goods without intending to do so, therefore be careful what you agree to! Other beaches around the island are slightly less developed for tourists but are sure to provide the real Koh Samui experience. Exploration around the island can be done quickly and relatively inexpensively by taxi and tuc tuc, but normal safety precautions should be taken, especially at night. Click here for pictures.
