Newark on Trent, UK Newark-on-Trent, often known simply as Newark is a market town in the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands of England. The town lies on the River Trent, therefore earning its name. The population of Newark is approximately 24,000 according to the 2001 census, but Newark has become combined with neighboring towns such as Balderton as Newark itself has spread outwards over recent years. The town is situated within close proximity to the large city of Nottingham, but remains far enough away to enjoy surrounding countryside and a quieter lifestyle than that of a busy city.
Newark is home to the Newark Antiques Fair and is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. It attracts thousands of bargain spotters to the area and takes place at the Newark Showground on the edge of the town. The area around the river is extremely picturesque, and it is worth visiting the market place, the remains of Newark Castle (where King John of England died), and the town centre itself. Taking a walk around the town centre is very enjoyable, and getting some lunch and sitting near the river if the weather is good is definitely recommended. The town itself is well served by the road network, and also has a train station with good connections which is slightly outside of the town centre itself, as well as a smaller local station near to the castle remains. Newark is a beautiful town with a rich history and should definitely be considered for half a day out in during a visit to the East Midlands! Click here for pictures.
