New York City, NY, USA

New York City (or NYC as it is better known) is the USA's most populous city with nearly 19 million people living in its greater metropolitan area. New York City itself is located within New York State, and the city is subdivided into 5 boroughs. These 5 boroughs are: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Queens.

Manhattan is usually the most popular destination for tourists and is the heart of New York City. It is home to Wall Street - the financial district, Central Park, and one of the world's most recognised city skylines amongst numerous other sights and attractions.

With famous buildings such as the Empire State Building, and the Chrysler Building, Manhattan is home to some of the tallest buildings in the world. The former site of the World Trade Center (demolished in the September 11th terrorist attacks), known as Ground Zero, is also situated at the southern end of Manhattan.

In addition to some of the more obvious sites which many tourists frequent such as the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and Central Park, we recommend visiting some of the less obvious sites, such as the Soho area, Battery Park in the south of Manhattan (where some remains of the World Trade Center can be found), and the Grand Central Terminal train and metro station which is an attraction within itself for its splendor and size.

For shopping fans, Manhattan is the ideal destination with top designer names including Ralph Lauren and Bloomingdale's, and a trip to NYC wouldn't be complete without visiting Macy's (which claims to be the world's largest department store)! Often shoppers from overseas may be eligible to claim back their sales tax if the products are being taken overseas so check with the retailer if they offer such incentives before spending all of your cash!

Traveling around New York City is relatively easy with a surplus of taxis available around the city, and an extensive metro network, in addition to a bus service along major routes. Travel is relatively inexpensive, but can be overcrowded at peak times, particularly on weekdays. It is worth remembering basic safety precautions when traveling in New York City, especially when alone and particularly at night, but the transport is generally safe. Click here for pictures.
