Orlando, FL, USA

In November 1963 Walt Disney started considering the Orlando area of central Florida for a new theme park. 40 years later, the Orlando / Kissimmee area is hugely developed - it's strategic position at the junction of Interstate 4 and the Florida Turnpike being a major factor.

Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to Orlando each year, from all over the world, with one of the key attractions being the large number of theme parks and entertainment facilities. Fortunately Orlando has been designed to cope with the vast numbers of tourists who visit, and there are parks and attractions to suit all tastes.

Greater Orlando has a huge range of shopping, with outlet malls, departmental stores and specialist retailers. Every restaurant you can imagine is here - steak restaurants, Italian restaurants, fish restaurants and of course, all of the usual fast food options!

The downtown Orlando area cannot be described as a historical sight-seeing location, due to its fairly recent large-scale development, but it is worth spending a couple of hours in the downtown area as it is a pleasant place to walk around and get a feel for the USA.

The main entertainment parks in or near to Orlando are:

  • Walt Disney World - the classic Orlando resort where kids can experience the wonders of the Magic Castle and can meet all of their favorite Disney characters
  • Sea World - where adults and children will enjoy spectacular, high quality marine mammal shows and numerous live events throughout the day
  • Universal Studios - the home of film production company Universal which features many rides and attractions relating to their productions
  • Epcot - one of the Disney parks which has some big rides, as well as some smaller ones, and various live events and performances
  • Busch Gardens - a combination of gardens, rides and nature all combined to make one big day out which kids and adults will thoroughly enjoy

It is worth remembering that many of these attractions can be expensive for admission, and some may be cheaper to book in advance online before you travel. Whilst most attractions are not affected by poor weather it is worth noting that some events, such as the fireworks at Disney World may not take place in heavy rain or strong winds. Many resorts offer accommodation deals which may include reduced price admission tickets, so be sure to check out all of the options before booking your trip to Orlando.
