Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Rotterdam is home to the largest port in The Netherlands, to the west of the city itself on the Hook of Holland.

Much of the city suffered severe damage during the Second World War, causing larger areas to be completely reconstructed since the 1950's. Thanks to Dutch planning laws, there is flexibility in the type of of buildings which can be constructed, which often leaves to fairly abstract designs and styles of modern establishments.

Rotterdam city center boasts an excellent public transport infrastructure, by way of trams, metro, buses, and fantastic intercity train services. This means that it is possible to commute to Amsterdam and Delft in a short space of time, allowing you to see a lot that Holland has to offer.

With the recent completion of the Erasmus bridge, the north and south of the city are well connected, and projects are ongoing to redevelop some of the more deprived inner city areas, particularly those on the south bank of the river such as Kopp Van Zuid which has been transformed using futuristic buildings and modern architecture.

Due to its major destruction during the war, Rotterdam holds few historic buildings and traditions, but has instead, been developed as a modern city which benefits greatly from the port. Whilst Rotterdam cannot be described as a particularly 'scenic' or 'traditional' European city it is fascinating in its design and modern approach, and if you're looking for a European city with a twist then Rotterdam may just be the place for you. Click here for pictures.
