San Francisco, CA, USA

San Francisco in California is the 14th most populous city in the United States of America. It is home to around 744,000 people. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the San Francisco bay to the East and lies on a peninsula, appropriately named the San Francisco peninsula.

Whilst traditionally the city of San Francisco hasn't been considered one of the key tourist destinations in the United States of America (in comparison to the likes of New York City, Miami, Orlando and Los Angeles), it is rapidly becoming more and more popular with international tourists.

The main reason for the city being able to draw in large crowds of tourists is its excellent blend of attractions, historical sites, cultural feel, and generally relaxed atmosphere, whilst at the same time providing a feel for what America is all about, and its location in large, steep, rolling hills.

San Francisco is home to attractions such as The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, the Coit Tower, and plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, to name but a few. 

A tour to Alcatraz island is thoroughly recommended, but it is worth noting that these can get booked fully, so you may need to book early to avoid disappointment. A visit to San Francisco wouldn't be complete without a trip on a traditional cable car up one of the steep hills that engulf the city itself.

During winter months San Francisco can be fairly cold, so warm clothing is recommended, particularly numerous layers as the winds can be quite strong due to the large number of hills. 

It is worth remembering that if members of your party have physical mobility constraints San Francisco may be difficult for them to walk around as very little of the land is flat, and cable cars are not easily accessible for a person with a physical disability, however many buses and taxis are equipped with access aids.
