St. Lucia, Caribbean Islands St. Lucia is one of the Caribbean islands, located within the Caribbean Sea. It is a popular destination with tourists thanks to its unspoiled beaches and its traditional feel. The island is just 239 square miles in size. The capital of the island is Castries, which is located in the north west of the island. St. Lucia is a volcanic island and its highest point is 950m above sea level. The island is famous for the Piton mountains on the western coast.
The head of state in St. Lucia is Queen Elizabeth II having only become independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. The majority religion on the island is Roman Catholic. Bananas provide the basis for St. Lucia's economy with tourism coming in at a close second in order of importance for the country's economy. Tourists visiting the islands predominantly do so for a beach holiday and to soak up some sun, which is guaranteed for a large portion of the year. Although Castries is a sizeable town relative to the island, it still has a generally small amount of shops, attractions and facilities. The majority of tourists will get maximum benefit from the island by booking to stay at an all-inclusive hotel and making use of the hotel restaurants and bar facilities, and perhaps booking a trip around the island for one day, and maybe a visit into central Castries another day. The island is generally safe as long as tourists stay in the main, busy areas, but it is not recommended to travel alone at night around the towns, or the rural areas for your own safety. Transport around the island is generally affordable, with reasonably priced taxis and organised day trips, which can often be booked through your hotel. Be warned that the quality of the roads on the island are largely poor, so driving in St. Lucia can be quite a challenge! If you want to see the island in all it's glory a helicopter flight over the island and between the mountains is recommended - but not for the feint hearted! Click here for pictures.
