The evolution of the
Kontours website
A brief history into the coming-about of the Kontours website can be found by clicking here. This page is designed to be an informative insight into the data regarding the Kontours site as a whole. We thought it would be best to break this data down into a mini-timeline, which can be found below! Please note, that statistical data may not be up-to-date, and is provided for illustrative purposes only. 2004 - 2007 The Kontours website idea had been established, and the first drafts of the website were made. The live site was first published in October 2004 with a couple of pages making up the entire site. As with any new website, it took a while to see any visitors coming along, but gradually, over time, the number of visitors grew, almost in parallel with the amount of content available, and by 2007, around 10 different people around the globe were visiting the Kontours site each day. Although this doesn't sound a great deal (and isn't a great deal in comparison to some of the big sites out there), it was felt that over 3000 visitors a year to a small website was good progress, and going in the right direction. The screenshot below shows an example of how a page of the Kontours website looked during 2005:
As you can see from the screenshot above, the website was quite simplistic, and the pictures in the middle were small. The links underneath the main title banner did not stand out clearly and the formatting was inconsistent. 2007 - 2009 During the latter part of 2007 an effort went underway to try and rectify some of the faults seen in the previous version of the Kontours site. One of the key considerations discussed was to try and enlarge the pictures on the site so that they could be seen clearly without clicking on thumbnails continuously. It was also imperative that formatting was made consistent and clear, and that the navigation menus were well structured and organised. The screenshot below shows how one page of the Kontours website looked during the early part of 2009:
As you can see from the above screenshot the formatting upgrade was a major benefit in the sense that links and navigation were clear and consistent, as were text areas and image sizes. Pictures on the website had been enlarged to 342 pixels wide as standard, and the ability to enlarge pictures had been removed. This allowed faster browsing of the website, and helped conserve bandwidth and download restrictions, making the site as cost-effective as possible to maintain. By the later part of 2009 it had been decided that although the Kontours website was now working efficiently, it was looking a bit dated, and the colours and formatting choices were not particularly interesting. It was also felt that the website lacked some key features still such as a search facility, translation options, and some user interactivity. 2009 - onwards The version of Kontours which you see on your screen is the most current version, launched towards the end of 2009. You can see that improvements have been made as the colour palette has been brightened, and the layout has been improved to provide clear and concise information, and all pictures have been increased in size yet again. Every page has a translation facility in the top right hand corner, and every page has a search box below the main content. Regrettably, due to cost restrictions, the translation offered is an automatic service, and therefore may contain some grammatical errors.
